OTHER ACADEMIC WORKS | A SENSUOUS COLLISION
BETWEEN WORK AND HOME
Individual Study | Fall 2022
With the aim of rethinking the architectural form of SOHO and responding to the problems, the project is designed primarily for the working community
of the tech industry clustered around Zhongguancun, Beijing.
The form takes inspiration from metabolism architecture and the concept of plug-in modules. The vertical circulation system is moved to the exterior
of the building to free up the interior space and provide direct access to office/home units. Programmatically, it allows for flexible reconfiguration
of different sizes of modules that can be combined to accommodate large-scale activities or individualized for private uses. The homogeneity of
repetitive modules dismisses a hierarchical system and suggests equal opportunities for technological and cultural interventions.
The idea of “urban oasis” is introduced through a series of sky gardens connected by one continuous main circulation. The 16m x 16m modules are
vegetated to allow access to nature from the office as well as cross ventilation from all directions. Each sky garden becomes an additional ground level
that can be used as space for informal meetings, social interactions, lunch, and coffee breaks.
